Chapter Eleven

Evan

* * *

I showed up at Kendall’s door, wondering if this was a good idea but knowing it was the only one I had. She opened the door before I had a chance to even get my thoughts in order, and I sucked in a deep breath, staring at her, unable to even comprehend what I was seeing. Probably because, like usual, she took my damn breath away.

She wore soft gray pants that floated out from her hips, making it look like a long skirt, and a silk top with a cardigan of some sort, and just looked comfortable. And yet fancy at the same time. I usually saw her in black leggings or black jeans with a tight T-shirt and a chef’s apron, and while I loved that, because it was Kendall in her element, I loved this too. She looked soft, feminine. Mine.

I hadn’t even realized I was growling until I looked up at her face, and she raised a brow, her eyes dancing.

“I take it you like the outfit? I didn’t want to go too fancy since it’s you Wilders, but I also wanted to look nice. Because hi, since you sort of claimed me at the wedding, I’m going with you as your date to a Wilder dinner.”

I swallowed hard, leaned forward, and captured her lips with my own. “You claim me right back, Kendall. You know that.”

She ran her hand over her hips, shaking her head as a rueful smile played over her lips. “Did I? I feel like I blanked out completely.”

I just shook my head and held out my hand. I nearly let out an audible breath when she slid hers into mine. “You said we’re going to try this. Because we’re figuring out who we are now instead of who we were before. So let’s do it. Full in.”

“As in full in together. Both of us going to see your family.” She swallowed hard and looked down at our joined hands. “I didn’t do this when we were married, you know.”

When I tugged her out of her doorway and closed the door behind her, making sure it was locked, I kissed her softly on the lips and brushed her hair behind her ear.

“None of us lived near each other. And it wasn’t like all of us getting holidays off was possible. I wasn’t trying to hide you from them.”

“I know. We only had two years together before.”

Pain arced through me, and I winced. “I don’t know how to say I’m sorry. For hurting you like that. For taking away the years we could’ve had.”

She shook her head, then cupped my face. “I might disagree with how you did it, but I understand it, and we grew into different people, figured out who we needed to be now. And so we’re taking it slow and figuring out if those two people that we’ve become actually work together. And we’re doing it. Slowly.”

“You are so much more mature than I am,” I grumbled.

And she laughed.
